Bauhinia x blakeana also known as The orchid tree of Hong Kong grows 20 to 40 feet in height and develops a circular spreading canopy composed of broad gray / green leaves, six to eight inch in diameter. Since young trees may be irregularly shaped, pruning is often required in the first few years after propagation to create a more uniform crown. It is, however, the beautiful display of orchid-like blooms that makes the Hong Kong Orchid Tree so attractive and beautiful, the great six-inch flora that appears in many shades of purple, violet, and pink during the summer, fall and early winter months, when the garden is usually of little colour. These flowers are sterile and don’t plant seed so the plant doesn’t drop off as many orchid trees and won’t become a plague in the countryside. Often, this is the orchid tree to be planted in urban landscapes.
