Aloe species have big, smooth, fleshy leaves. Aloe flowers are tubular, sometimes very dark, orange, pink or purple, tightly clustered and pendulous at the apex of single or ramified unleafed stems. Most Aloe plants are stemless and the rosette develops straight at ground level; some specimens can have a branched or un-branched stem that is the product of fleshy leaves. It ranges in colour from grey to shiny green and is often streaked or ridiculed. Any South African aloes are tree-like (arborescent).
