The tree reaches between 50 and 60 feet in height, has a furrowed trunk, oblong stalk-like leaves up to 6 inches long and 4 inches wide, spread across the trunk in 4 to 6 whores, its upper side sparkling, underneath green, nerves running at the right angle to the central lab. Bark is almost odorless and very salty, it is present in the trade in the uneven 1/8 to 1/2 cm thick pieces, surface spongy, coarse and tiny fractures, exterior layer in unregulated fissured brownish gray and occasionally in blackish spots.
