The orange blood or Citrus sinensis is a type of orange (Citrus to sinensis) with more blood-colored, crimson skin. The fruit is smaller than an typical orange tree; the surface is typically shiny, yet soft. The distinctive appearance of dark flesh is attributed to the existence of antioxidant agents typical to many flowers and fruits, but rare in citrus fruits. As the fruit emerges throughout the night at low temperatures, the flesh produces its distinctive maroon color. Often the surface of the rind is often red, depending on the variation of blood orange. The fruit can be smoother and easier to peel than other oranges.
While all oranges are likely of hybrid origin between the pomelo and the tangerine, blood oranges originated as a mutation of the sweet orange.
