Description Hamelia patens (Mexican Firebush,Firecracker Shrub,Hummingbird Bush , Scarlet Bush) is a showy, rapidly-growing, semi-wood, tendency to remain evergreen bush that is up to a height of 15 feett (4.6 meter) and typically stays slightly smaller, under ideal conditions. The leaves have rounded, usually three but sometimes seven at each node. The leaves are elliptical to oval, about 6 inches (15 cm) large, and underneath contain reddish veins and petioles and gray-pubescent. From the midvein they are mirrored upwards. Firebush develops the showy terminal clusters (cymes), each year with approximately 0.75 inch or (1.9 cm) length, brilliant reddish orange or Scarlet tubular flowers. Even the stems of the plants are red. The fruit clusters are also evident. Growing fruit is a savvy berry that matures from green, yellow to red, eventually becomes black, and contains a large number of small grains. A plant of firebush typically has fruit and flowering in various stages. Firebush is grown annually in medium temperate climates. This gets just 2 feet (0.6 meter) in these conditions and leaves turns dark red in autumn.
