Ravenala madagascariensis also known as Travelers Palm is a large, upright tree with un-branched palm-type trunk topped with a fan-like crown of two ranked, poddle-like, shiny, lustrous, rich, green leaves. The oblong, 2-4 m long leaf pads are carried on thick grooved stalks with about the same size and are closely overlapped at the base. On fully grown plants, small, short white flowers of 6 petals each arise, some at a time, in the summer, from the pointed, boat-type shape, greenish white spathes; they are preceded by a fruit capsule containing seeds of bright blue arils.
