Description Washingtonia filifera (California Fan Palm) is popular at 40-50 feet but capable of growing to 80 feet in height. Desert Fan Palm is easily recognised as related to Washingtonia robusto, which has long become the more overused, smooth, single trunking street palm. Desert Fan Palm, though, is more suited for the home environment because it grows slowly and is shorter. It helps it to be used as a mass planting in other greenhouse uses, such as containers or grouping. In Florida, it does not expand well as it sometimes experiences trunk or root rot.
